The wrong Phuket hotel can look perfect in photographs. The pool is lovely, the balcony has a sea view, and breakfast involves an admirable amount of fruit. Then you discover that every dinner needs a car and the beach is below a hill you would rather admire than climb.
Choosing where to stay in Phuket starts with the trips you do not want to make. For a beach-focused first visit, I would shortlist Kata or Karon. Put Patong first if nightlife matters, Bang Tao on the list if the resort is a major part of the holiday, and Phuket Old Town first if food, cafés and historic streets interest you more than daily beach time.
Those are planning recommendations, not a league table. The useful question is not which area wins Phuket. It is which address makes your particular week easier.

First, cross off the base that solves the wrong problem
If you want a beach every morning, do not book Old Town simply because a boutique room is cheaper. If you want to go out in Patong most nights, count the return journeys before choosing a remote resort. And if your plan is mainly pool, breakfast and a book, there is no need to pay extra just to be beside the busiest evening streets.
| Your priority | Start the search here | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Beach days with nearby meals | Kata or Karon | Actual beach entrance, road crossings and slope |
| Nightlife and late evenings out | Patong | Room noise and the route home after dark |
| Resort facilities and slower days | Bang Tao / Laguna | Distance to outside dining and shuttle conditions |
| A smaller beach-base shortlist | Kamala | Village/beach access versus a hillside address |
| Food, cafés and historic streets | Phuket Old Town | Beach journeys and the exact town location |
| An airport-focused final night | A suitable property near HKT | Actual terminal transfer, not just map proximity |
Start with one primary aim and one acceptable compromise. “A quiet resort, everything on foot, nightlife nearby, no traffic and a tiny bill” is not an area preference. It is a request for a small miracle with breakfast included.
Kata or Karon? Compare the doorway, not just the beach name
These are the first places I would compare for travelers who want a conventional beach holiday without making nightlife the organizing principle. Shortlist a hotel close to the meals and beach access you will repeatedly use, then inspect the room and cancellation terms.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Karon information places it north of Kata and describes accommodation, dining and visitor services in the area. That does not make every hotel carrying either name equally convenient. A district label is not a pedestrian route.
Kata would be my opening shortlist for a couple or family wanting to combine beach time with meals outside the hotel. This is an editorial starting point, not a promise that all of Kata is compact or step-free. Keep the hotel map open and trace your likely breakfast, dinner and beach routes.
Karon deserves an equal look when a particular room or hotel suits the group better. Do not reject it because another guide declares one beach universally superior. Compare the useful cluster around each property: the entrance you use, the nearby food, and whether crossing the road or walking back feels manageable for everyone.
“Sea view” and “easy beach access” are different purchases
A sea-view room may be elevated. A hotel described as near the beach may require a particular public entrance. Neither is automatically a problem, but both are worth knowing before arriving with a stroller, luggage or an enthusiastic plan to return to the room three times a day.
Beyond Kata’s official site, for example, describes a location directly on Kata Beach. That is a specific property claim you can investigate, not evidence that all Kata hotels have direct sand access. Ask other properties the same concrete question: “Can we reach the beach from the grounds, or which road and entrance do we use?”
For a hillside property, ask for the walk in both directions, internal steps, lift coverage and shuttle arrangements. A lovely downhill stroll can become a very different activity after dinner. Request photos or a clear access explanation if mobility is important; “accessible location” is too vague to settle it.
With children, compare bed arrangements, breakfast eligibility and shade as carefully as the pool photograph. A family room may contain beds that work perfectly for younger children and badly for two teenagers. Enter every child’s age before comparing prices.
Patong works best when you actually want Patong
Choose Patong deliberately for its evening options, rather than by default because the largest number of hotel listings happened to appear there. The Thailand Digital Tourism Center’s Bangla Road listing identifies the street with Phuket’s nightlife. If that is a major part of your trip, being based nearby can reduce repeated late-night transfers.
Nearby does not have to mean directly over the evening soundtrack. Light sleepers should inspect recent noise comments, request the room position and ask what faces the balcony. A quiet room request is not the same as a guaranteed quiet category.
There is another trap: a property can be in the Patong area without providing a casual beach walk. IHG’s Dinso Resort & Villas Phuket information describes a ride to Patong Beach. That may be exactly right for travelers seeking a retreat; it is a mismatch only if you assumed a beachfront address. Hotel names and destination filters cannot answer that question for you.
For a group with different evening plans, agree on the meeting point and return transport before splitting up. Save the property entrance pin, not only its name. If one person has the booking and everyone else has a screenshot of the pool, the group has not quite finished its arrival planning.
If you expect to visit Patong once, you do not necessarily need to sleep there all week. Make that one evening an outing and choose the base that supports the other six days.
Bang Tao and Kamala: make a resort-led choice honestly
Bang Tao belongs on the shortlist when the hotel grounds, pool and facilities are central to the holiday. A resort-led stay is not wasted travel time. Paying for a resort while spending every day away from it is the part worth questioning.
The exact address matters here, too. Beach access, outside restaurants and the wider resort area may be different journeys. Do not assume that a shuttle shown in a property listing links every place you have saved.
For example, Angsana Laguna Phuket lists a beachfront Bang Tao setting, family facilities and shuttle service on its official site. Use those as questions for your own stay: what runs during your dates, which destinations are covered, and do reservations or operating hours affect it? An included shuttle is not an unlimited island-wide taxi.
Kamala is another beach-base candidate if you want to broaden the comparison beyond Kata, Karon and Patong. I would assess a Kamala hotel on the actual route to food and the beach, not buy a blanket promise that the entire area is quiet. Read current property-level reviews and check for nearby evening venues or works.
For either area, sketch one ordinary day. Breakfast at the hotel, beach or pool, lunch, a rest, dinner: which parts are easy without arranging another ride? If that day looks appealing, the base may fit. If every line needs transport, include those journeys in the budget rather than treating them as a surprise expense.
Old Town is a city-style stay, not a cheaper beach hotel

Choose Old Town when you want your unplanned hours to become café stops, streetside browsing and another meal. Do not choose it expecting to step out onto a west-coast beach. The saving on a room needs to be weighed against the journeys required by your actual itinerary.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Old Town guide describes historic streets including Dibuk, Phang Nga, Yaowarat, Krabi and Soi Romanee, with older buildings adapted for accommodation, dining and shops. Check a hotel’s pin against the streets you plan to explore; “Phuket Town” is a broader search label than your intended walking cluster.
Small heritage properties deserve room-level questions. Ask which floor you are booking, how luggage reaches it, and whether a late arrival requires instructions. Check windows and room dimensions as well as decorative tiles. A beautiful common area does not tell you how well your suitcase fits beside the bed.
A couple of town nights can be appealing if food and architecture are priorities. For a short beach holiday, an outing may be enough. Neither choice requires calling the other side of Phuket a tourist trap.
If you enjoyed the city-versus-coast decision in our Penang accommodation guide, the planning principle is similar here, although the places and transport are different: choose the setting you want to use every day, not only the room you like online.
Check these airport and tour details before paying

For a beach base, the Phuket Smart Bus timetable page lists the airport–Patong–Karon–Kata–Rawai corridor. Its payment page currently shows a 100-baht flat fare for the airport–Patong–Rawai service, with cash and contactless Visa, Mastercard or JCB among the stated options. Check the latest schedule and your exact stop before relying on it.
The same operator lists other services with different fares. Do not apply the 100-baht airport corridor fare to every route carrying the Smart Bus name. Also, a QR-payment option does not mean every foreign banking app supports it; keep a workable backup payment method.
For Phuket Town, the airport’s official Airport Bus information identifies the separate orange route 8411 and describes distance-based fares. Check its current timetable and boarding signs. The beach corridor and the town airport service are not interchangeable just because both begin at HKT.
The last stretch matters most when you are tired: where is the stop relative to your hotel, is there a safe walking route, and does reception accept your arrival time? Do not turn a small transport saving into an unplanned luggage expedition.
For a group, late arrival or substantial luggage, you can compare Phuket Airport transfers on Klook. Enter the exact address, flight and passenger details before comparing quotes. Confirm luggage capacity, meeting instructions, delay handling and any child-seat requirement. A destination starting price is not a quote for every Phuket hotel.
Before booking boat tours or other excursions, ask whether your chosen hotel is inside the included pickup zone. Check surcharges, pickup windows, the departure pier and cancellation arrangements directly with the supplier. Do not choose a hotel based on an assumed pickup: a beautiful resort can still be outside a particular operator’s included area.
For the flight home, plan backward from the airline’s airport-arrival guidance and your actual departure period. Do not use a best-case map estimate as the entire buffer. An airport-side final night is an option, not a requirement; compare it with the cost and inconvenience of changing hotels.
A beach booking needs a weather backup
No Phuket neighborhood comes with guaranteed swimming conditions. Follow current beach flags and lifeguard instructions; a red flag means do not swim. TAT’s general marine-safety guidance explains the risk of waves and rip currents and notes that boat trips may be cancelled or delayed for unsafe weather. This is standing guidance, not a forecast or a new October 2026 alert.
For a stay around the wetter part of the year, a usable hotel pool, comfortable room and indoor meal options can become more valuable than a marginally better sea view. Check current forecasts before outings, keep a flexible town day, and do not schedule a non-refundable boat trip as the only possible highlight.
A pool does not remove the need to follow the property’s own weather and safety rules. Nor does a calm-looking promotional image tell you what the sea will be doing when you arrive.
One hotel or two? Three realistic ways to book
Three or four nights, beach first: choose one well-positioned Kata or Karon hotel. Plan a town outing if it fits, with a return arrangement. A short stay rarely improves by adding a moving day just to test another breakfast buffet.
Four nights, evenings out: shortlist Patong, then solve noise and beach access at the property level. Do not book far away and quietly assume daily late-night transfers will be trivial.
A week with two distinct moods: consider a short Old Town stay followed by a beach or resort base. On the moving day, confirm bag storage and check-in times. Keep essentials separate so a room that is not ready does not also mean inaccessible medication or a change of clothes.
For the wider country route, our Thailand itinerary guide helps put Phuket alongside other stops. If Bangkok comes first, use the separate Bangkok area comparison rather than assuming the same neighborhood priorities apply in both destinations.
Finish with a room-level comparison
After narrowing the area, browse Phuket accommodation on Agoda and compare Phuket hotels on Trip.com. Both are destination-wide searches, not prefiltered Kata, Patong or family recommendations. Use the map and enter the same dates, guests and currency.
Compare the final payable total, not just a discount badge. Match bed type, occupancy, breakfast coverage, taxes and other charges, payment timing, deposit requirements and cancellation deadline. A flexible room and a non-refundable room are different purchases even when their photographs match.
Get written confirmation of any non-negotiable: connecting rooms, step-free access, a cot or a late-night check-in procedure. If payment or booking confirmation is uncertain, contact the platform before repeatedly submitting another reservation.
The practical default: shortlist Kata and Karon for a beach-led first trip, choose Patong for evenings out, choose a resort area because you want to use the resort, and book Old Town for town life. Then verify the doorway, room and daily journeys. That is where a good Phuket stay becomes more than a persuasive photograph.
