Trip style
Snow art + winter city

Why make this the reason for the trip?

The festival is easy to understand once it is divided into three moods: Odori for the long central display of large and small snow sculptures, Susukino for ice works in the nightlife district, and Tsudome for snow play and family activities. The official 2026 outline ran all three sites from February 4 to 11, but the current official site is already moving toward the next edition, so archived details should not be reused automatically.

A realistic festival trip shape

  1. Day 1Walk Odori in daylight and after dark

See sculpture detail before sunset, warm up indoors, then return for illumination or projection programming.

  2. Day 2Choose Tsudome or a city day

Families can give Tsudome a dedicated half-day; other travelers can use the day for food, museums or a short excursion.

  3. Day 3+Finish in Susukino

Pair the ice display with dinner, leaving extra time for slippery streets and busy transit.

Getting there and moving around

Odori and Susukino are central and work well by subway and on foot. For the 2026 Tsudome site, the official page listed a 15-minute walk from Sakaemachi Station and a shuttle connection; future arrangements must be rechecked. Avoid relying on a rental car for central festival nights.

What to expect

Large sculptures, citizen-made works, ice displays and winter attractions create a route rather than a single show. Lighting and projection programs are strongest after dark, while sculpture details and family areas are easier earlier in the day.

Weather and packing

Use insulated waterproof footwear with traction, warm socks, gloves, a hat and layers that can be removed indoors. Phone batteries drain quickly in cold conditions, and packed snow can be more difficult than fresh snowfall.

Practical and respectful travel

  • Walk slowly and keep both hands available on icy surfaces.
  • Check attraction closing times before making the longer trip to Tsudome.
  • Use indoor arcades, underground passages and cafés as planned warming stops.

Build the wider trip

Sapporo has enough food and culture for several days without adding a distant winter transfer. If adding an excursion, protect one day so weather disruption does not affect the flight home.

  • Nijo Market and central Sapporo food stops
  • The Sapporo Beer Museum area
  • Otaru as a separate weather-dependent day trip
